Is Social Media Beneficial to Society?

     How many times a day do you scroll through tik tok or instagram comparing yourself to the unrealistic models? According to the back linko “on average 3.96 billion people worldwide use social media.” Social media is one of the main causes of depression, anxiety, and low self esteem in young teens and even children. However, it is also giving people a chance to connect with others from a distance. Why is social media so important? How does it affect us negatively? 

     Social media became a tool to seek customers and advertise goods online. These different ways helped business into the marketing world. Social media is a way that businesses can reach customers from all over the world in just seconds. This is a great feature customers can benefit from. Although, this is definitely a turning point in harming small local businesses. 

    According to bachelor studies “a study found that students who spent the most time using social media had fewer academic behaviors, such as completing homework and attending class, lower academic confidence and more problems affecting their school work, like lack of sleep.” The addiction to social media affects the academic performance of students as they waste their time on social media instead of studying. Nonetheless, social media could also be used as a tool to help students with studying. 

    Furthermore, cyber bullying is one of the worst things on social media that is affecting young teens and even children's mental health. Being targeted by a cyberbully increases children's risk of anxiety, depression, and even low self-esteem. This may even cause feelings of worthlessness for children and young teens. According to the American Association of Suicidology. Suicide rates among 10- to 14-year-olds have grown more than 50 percent over the last three decades.” Cyber bullying is a huge reason for the amount suicide rates that are going up.

    In conclusion, social media has both advantages and disadvantages. At this point, it all depends on the user, and the way they decide to use social media. It is important to create balance between academic performances, physical activities, and social media.
